The acquisition of translation competence by English and French language students at the University of Veracruz

This article analyzes the level of translation competence obtained by students from the English and French Language degrees, at the School of Languages of the Universidad Veracruzana during the August-September 2017 semester. This research arises from a common interest in the teaching-learning process of students, and how this leads to the acquisition of translation skills. The approach is qualitative; its type of study is exploratory, descriptive and explanatory. The research employs theory from translation studies, applied linguistics and educational research. The sample was composed of English and French Language students, as well as translation professors of both degrees. The data was collected from information obtained through semi-structured interviews, life stories and units of analysis (translations). The findings show that the students developed an elementary translation competence.
